Post-Roman Welsh kingdoms. Dunoding is in the northwest, along the southern edge of the Llŷn Peninsula. The modern Anglo-Welsh border is also shown.

Dunoding was a small kingdom in north-west Wales a long time ago. It existed between the 400s and 900s AD. Think of it as a smaller area that was part of a bigger kingdom called Gwynedd.

People believe Dunoding was named after a person called Dunod. He was the son of Cunedda Wledig, who founded the larger Kingdom of Gwynedd. Around 460 AD, Dunod helped drive out Irish settlers from this area.

Dunoding stayed a part of Gwynedd until about 925 AD. This was when the family line of Dunod, who had been ruling the area, ended. After that, Dunoding was split into two smaller regions called cantrefi. These were Eifionydd and Ardudwy. A cantref was like a county or district in old Wales.

Later, in 1283, the Kingdom of Gwynedd was defeated and became part of England. The two cantrefi, Eifionydd and Ardudwy, then became parts of different counties. Today, this area is part of the modern county of Gwynedd in Wales. Wales now has its own government, which is called a devolved government.
