You can find Durant about 6.4 kilometers (or 4 miles) east-southeast of Brandon. It has its own post office with the ZIP code 33530, which first opened its doors on August 27, 1902. Durant is also home to Durant High School, a well-known school in the area.
A Look Back: Durant's History
The Railroad Days
Durant has an interesting past, especially when it comes to railroads. Back in 1895, a special train track was built here. This track was part of the Sarasota Subdivision rail line. It connected Durant all the way down to Sarasota. Later on, the line was even extended north to Turkey Creek.
Trains used this line for many years, helping to move goods and people around. It was an important part of transportation for the region.
Changes Over Time
The rail line continued to be used until 1981. At that time, a company called CSX took over the line. CSX kept using parts of the track in Durant to store train cars until 1986. After that, the tracks were no longer actively used for regular train service.
Today, Durant remains a peaceful community, known for its local high school and its quiet, residential feel.
