The Durham Cassiodorus is a very old and special book from the 700s. It's an illuminated manuscript, which means it's a handwritten book with beautiful pictures and decorations. This book contains a work by a writer named Cassiodorus, which explains parts of the Bible called the Psalms.

This amazing book was made in a place called Northumbria (in England) around the year 730. It is still kept safe today in the library of Durham Cathedral in the north-east of England.

The book has 261 pages that are still around today. It's the oldest copy we know of this particular book by Cassiodorus. We can even tell that six different people, called scribes, wrote parts of it!

What Pictures Are Inside?

This ancient book has two main pictures, also known as miniatures, that are still visible today. Both of these pictures show King David, an important figure from the Bible.

  • One picture shows David as Victor, meaning David as a winner or hero.
  • The other picture shows David as Musician, playing an instrument.

It's believed there was a third picture in the book at one point, but it has been lost over time. These pictures help us understand the art and beliefs of people living in the 8th century.
