Duván Esteban Zapata Banguero (born on April 1, 1991) is a professional football player from Colombia. He plays as a forward for the Italian club Torino.

Duván started his football journey with América de Cali in Colombia. Later, he moved to Estudiantes in Argentina. Since 2013, he has played in Italy's top league, Serie A, for teams like Napoli, Udinese, Sampdoria, Atalanta, and Torino.

He became very well-known during his time at Atalanta. There, he formed a strong attacking team with his fellow Colombian player, Luis Muriel. Duván Zapata also plays for the Colombian national team. He made his first appearance for them in 2017 and played in the Copa América tournaments in 2019 and 2021.

Duván Zapata's Club Journey

Starting at América de Cali

Duván Zapata joined the youth team of América de Cali when he was 13 years old in 2004. He played his first game for the main team on May 18, 2008. In that game, he even scored a goal, though his team lost 3–2 to Boyaca Chico.

In December 2008, América de Cali won the league title. Duván scored his first hat-trick (three goals in one game) on February 13, 2011. This helped his team win 3–2 against Deportivo Pereira. He left the club at the end of the 2011 season.

Playing for Estudiantes

On July 27, 2011, Duván Zapata moved to Estudiantes in Argentina on a loan. He scored a goal in his very first game for them, helping them win 3–2 against Belgrano.

During his first year, he scored four goals in eight matches. In 2012, Estudiantes bought half of his playing rights from América de Cali. For the 2012–13 season, Duván became a key player for Estudiantes. He scored 16 goals in 33 games, which made many European clubs interested in him.

A club from England, West Ham United, was interested in signing him in 2013. However, the transfer did not happen.

Time at Napoli

On August 25, 2013, Zapata moved to Serie A club Napoli. He made his first start in Serie A on September 28, helping Napoli win 2–0 against Genoa. On October 22, he scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League against Marseille.

He scored his first league goals for Napoli on March 26, 2014, scoring two goals in a 4–2 win against Catania. He ended that season with five goals.

Later, Duván went on loan to Udinese for two years starting in July 2015. Then, on August 31, 2017, he joined Sampdoria on another loan deal.

Success with Atalanta

On July 12, 2018, Zapata joined Atalanta on a two-year loan. He quickly became a star player there.

On December 26, 2018, he scored two goals in a 2–2 draw against Juventus. On January 20, 2019, Duván scored an amazing four goals in a 5–0 win against Frosinone. This made him the first Atalanta player since 1952 to score four goals in a Serie A game!

He scored 23 league goals that season, helping Atalanta finish third in Serie A. This also meant they qualified for the Champions League. Because of his great performance, he was named in the Serie A Team of the Year.

On October 1, 2019, Zapata scored Atalanta's first-ever goal in the UEFA Champions League. On January 17, 2020, Atalanta officially bought him. He continued to score many goals, including two against Ajax in the Champions League on October 27, 2020.

Moving to Torino

On September 1, 2023, Zapata joined Torino on a loan deal. In the summer of 2024, he joined the club permanently and was named their captain.

Sadly, on October 6, 2024, he got a serious knee injury (an ACL injury) during a game against Inter Milan. This injury means he will not be able to play for the rest of the 2024–25 season.

Duván Zapata's International Career

Duván Zapata was first called to play for the Colombian national team in March 2017. He made his first appearance on March 23, 2017, coming on as a substitute in a 1–0 win against Bolivia.

In May 2018, he was part of Colombia's first squad for the 2018 World Cup. However, he did not make it into the final team.

On May 30, 2019, Zapata was chosen for Colombia's team for the 2019 Copa América. He scored his first goal for his country on June 9, 2019, in a friendly game against Peru. He then scored in the first two group games of the Copa América against Argentina and Qatar.

In June 2021, he was again part of Colombia's squad for the 2021 Copa América. He scored a penalty kick in the quarter-final shootout against Uruguay, which Colombia won. Colombia finished third in the tournament.

Duván Zapata's Family

Duván Zapata is the cousin of another famous Colombian football player, Cristián Zapata. Cristián is a defender for Atlético Nacional.
