Dwayne Alonzo "Pearl" Washington (born January 6, 1964 – died April 20, 2016) was an American professional basketball player. He was a talented guard who stood 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 190 pounds.

Early Life

Dwayne Washington grew up in Brownsville, a part of Brooklyn, New York City. He got his famous nickname "Pearl" when he was just eight years old. People compared him to the famous basketball player Earl "the Pearl" Monroe. Dwayne was an amazing player on the playgrounds. He was even named the number one high school basketball player in the whole United States in 1983.

College Basketball

Dwayne "The Pearl" Washington brought his exciting style of play to Syracuse University. He played his college games at the Carrier Dome. He was known for a move called the "shake and bake." This move would make his opponents stand still while he quickly drove past them for a layup. Even Utah Jazz point guard and NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton said that Dwayne was the toughest player he ever had to guard.

Professional Career

Playing for the New Jersey Nets

Dwayne Washington was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in the first round of the 1986 NBA draft. He was the 13th player picked overall. He played for the Nets for two seasons, from 1986 to 1988. During his time with the Nets, he scored about 9 points per game.

Playing for the Miami Heat

In 1988, the Miami Heat picked Dwayne Washington in their expansion draft. This draft allowed new teams to choose players from other teams. He played 54 games for the Heat. After that, he was released from the team.

Other Teams

After leaving the Miami Heat, Dwayne Washington continued to play basketball. He joined teams in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for the Rapid City Thrillers from 1989 to 1990. Then, he played for the San Jose Jammers from 1990 to 1991.

Later Life and Passing

On August 27, 2015, Dwayne Washington had surgery at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. The surgery was to treat a serious brain tumor. Sadly, he passed away on April 20, 2016, at the age of 52.
