Dwight Clinton Jones (born February 3, 1948) is an American politician and pastor. He served as the 79th Mayor of Richmond, Virginia. Mayor Jones began his first term on January 1, 2009. He was sworn in for his second term on January 12, 2013. His time as mayor ended on December 31, 2016, when Levar Stoney became the new mayor. Jones is a member of the Democratic Party. He was also chosen to lead the Democratic Party of Virginia for a time.

Early Life and Education

Dwight Clinton Jones was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later moved to Richmond, Virginia. He studied at Virginia Union University, where he earned two degrees. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. Later, in 1973, he earned a Master of Divinity degree. He continued his education at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where he earned his doctorate.

Mr. Jones is a Baptist minister. He serves as the senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of South Richmond.

Serving on the School Board

Before becoming mayor, Dwight Jones was involved in local government. In 1979, he became a member of the Richmond City School Board. He later served as the chairman of the school board from 1982 to 1985.

Time in the Virginia House of Delegates

In 1993, Jones was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates. This is a part-time job where people represent their local areas. He represented the 70th District, which included parts of Richmond. He served in this role from 1994 until 2008. He decided not to run for re-election that year.

Building New Schools

Dwight Jones became Richmond's 79th mayor on January 1, 2009. During his time as mayor, four new schools were built. These included Broad Rock Elementary and Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary. A new middle school, Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, was also built. One of the biggest projects was Huguenot High School. This was the first new high school built in Richmond in 40 years.

Improving City Facilities

Mayor Jones also oversaw other important public works projects. A new fire station, Fire Station 17, was finished in 2012. This was the first new fire station built in Richmond in 18 years. It replaced an old station from 1917. A new Richmond City Jail was also constructed. It opened in July 2014. The old jail, built in the 1960s, had many problems with overcrowding and maintenance. The new jail helped solve these issues.
