Dwijen Sharma (born May 29, 1929 – died September 15, 2017) was a famous Bangladeshi naturalist and writer. A naturalist is someone who studies nature, especially plants and animals. He loved nature and wrote many books about science and the environment. He received important awards like the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1987 and the Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his amazing work in literature and language. These awards were given by the Government of Bangladesh.

Early Life and Nature's Call
Dwijen Sharma was born in a village called Shimulia. This village is in the Moulvibazar District of Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. His father, Chandrakand Sharma, was a "Kobiraj," which means a traditional rural doctor. His mother, Mognomoyi Debi, was a social worker who helped people in her community. When Dwijen was a child, he loved exploring the Patharia hill forest. This forest was close to his home in Barlekha Upazila. His early love for nature shaped his future work.
Education and Career Journey
Dwijen Sharma studied at City College, Kolkata, where he earned his first university degree. Later, in 1958, he completed his master's degree in botany. Botany is the scientific study of plants. He got this degree from the University of Dhaka.
After his studies, he started teaching. He first worked at Brojomohun College in Barisal. In 1962, he moved to Dhaka and joined Notre Dame College, Dhaka. He taught there until 1974.
Later, he moved to Moscow, the capital of Russia. There, he worked for a company called Progress Publishers. This company published books, and Dwijen Sharma worked as a translator, changing books from one language to another.
In 2000, he returned to Bangladesh. He joined the Banglapedia project at the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. Banglapedia is like a national encyclopedia for Bangladesh. He worked as an editor and translator for biology topics. He also served as the vice president of the Asiatic Society for three years. While he was part of the publishing committee, the Asiatic Society published a huge encyclopedia. It had 56 volumes and covered all the plants and animals of Bangladesh.

Family Life
Dwijen Sharma was married to Devi Sharma. She was a professor at Central Women's University. They had one son and one daughter. His niece, Manisha Chakraborty, is also a well-known person in Bangladeshi politics.
