Dyer is a small place in Webster County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
Dyer is located near the Williams River. You can find it about 4.9 miles (7.9 km) east-southeast of a town called Cowen.
The Story of Dyer's Name
Dyer wasn't always called Dyer. When it first started, this community was known as Haynes.
How Haynes Became Dyer
The name changed because of a special person. In 1893, a post office was opened in Haynes. A post office is where people send and receive mail. The person in charge of the post office is called a postmaster.
The postmaster for Haynes was a man named George M. Dyer. He worked there for many years, from 1893 until 1923. Because he was such an important part of the community, the name of the village was changed to "Dyer" in 1911.
The Post Office Closes
The post office in Dyer continued to serve the community for a while. However, in 1938, it was closed down. After that, people living in Dyer had to get their mail from the nearby town of Cowen.
