E. V. Krishna Pillai (born September 14, 1894 – died March 30, 1938) was a talented Indian writer. He wrote in the Malayalam language, which is spoken in Kerala. He was also a member of the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly, a group that helped make important decisions in the old Kingdom of Travancore. He was known for his funny stories, plays, and clever writings.

Life Story

E. V. Krishna Pillai was born on September 14, 1894. His family lived in a place called Kunnathur Taluk, in the Kollam district. His parents were Pappu Pillai and Karthyayani Amma.

After finishing school in Kunnathur, Krishna Pillai studied further. He earned degrees in Arts and Law. He then started his career working for the government.

He married Maheswari Amma. She was the youngest daughter of a very famous writer named C. V. Raman Pillai. E. V. Krishna Pillai and Maheswari Amma had seven children together. They had five sons and two daughters.

Three of their sons became well-known in their own careers.

  • Chandraji (Ramachandran Nair) was a famous film actor.
  • Adoor Bhasi (Bhaskaran Nair) became one of the greatest comedians in Malayalam cinema.
  • Padmanabhan Nair (Padman) was a journalist. He also created a popular cartoon called Kunchu Kurup.

His other children were Omana Amma, Rajalakshmi Amma, Sankaran Nair, and Krishnan Nair. Sadly, Sankaran Nair passed away when he was only 18 years old.

Later in his life, Krishna Pillai became an editor for newspapers. He worked for publications like Malayali and Malayala Manorama. During this time, he moved his home to Peringanad, near Adoor. This area was part of the old Travancore state. He also served as a member of the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly of Travancore. This group was like a local parliament, helping to make laws and decisions for the region.

Krishna Pillai was a very talented person. He was good at many things. He worked as a lawyer, a member of the assembly, an editor, and a writer. Even though he lived a short life, he wrote many comedies, dramas, short stories, and his own life story. He also wrote regular articles for newspapers and drew funny pictures of people. He was known as a clever satirist, someone who used humor to comment on society. He was truly an expert in comedy.

E. V. Krishna Pillai passed away on March 30, 1938. He was only 43 years old.

To remember him and his contributions, an award has been created in his honor. It is called the E. V. Krishna Pillai Smaraka Sahitya Award.
