History of EGX Events

The very first Eurogamer Expo happened in 2008. It was held at the Old Truman Brewery in London. About 4,000 people came to this first event.
In 2009, the show took place in two different cities. It was held at The Royal Armouries in Leeds. It also happened at the Old Billingsgate Market in London.
EGX in London and Birmingham
From 2010 to 2014, the event was held at Earls Court in London. This was its home for five years. After Earls Court closed, EGX moved to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. This was part of a deal for many years.
In 2012, the people behind Eurogamer started a new show. It was called Rezzed. This show focused on PC games and games made by smaller, independent companies. The first Rezzed event was in Brighton. Later, Eurogamer Expo also added a Rezzed section to its main show.
In October 2013, the main Eurogamer Expo changed its name. It became EGX London. The Rezzed show was renamed EGX Rezzed. The EGX London name was stopped in 2014. After moving to Birmingham NEC, the main show was simply called EGX.
Expanding to New Locations
In 2018, EGX announced a new event. It was held in Berlin, Germany. This was the first time EGX went outside the UK. Later in 2018, it was also announced that EGX 2019 would return to the ExCeL in London.
Online Events and Changes
In 2020, many events had to change because of the COVID-19 pandemic. EGX Rezzed 2020 was first postponed. Then, it was completely cancelled. EGX 2020 was also cancelled.
Instead of in-person shows, EGX teamed up with PAX. They held a 9-day online event. It was called PAX Online X EGX Digital. This allowed gamers to still connect and see new games from home.
In 2021, EGX announced that live events would return. This depended on safety guidelines and vaccinations. They wanted to bring back EGX Rezzed and EGX as in-person shows.
Later in 2021, EGX Rezzed changed its name again. It became EGX Birmingham. It returned to the NEC in Birmingham. The idea was to make the "Rezzed Zone" bigger. It would show indie games and also games from larger studios. The 2022 event was postponed to 2023 due to the Omicron variant.
EGX London 2023 took place at the ExCeL London. TikTok was a main partner for the show. The event also hosted two Esports tournaments. These were for the games Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 6.
