Eachann Mac Goraidh MacAlasdair, also known as Hector MacGorrie MacAlester, was an important leader in Scotland. He was the 6th Chief of Clan MacAlister, a powerful family group. He became the Chief in 1636. Hector lived during a time of big changes and conflicts in Scotland. He passed away in 1647.
Who Was Hector MacAlister?
Hector MacAlister became the leader, or Chief, of Clan MacAlister in 1636. This was a time when different groups in Scotland were fighting. These fights were part of bigger conflicts called the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
Hector himself did not join the battles with leaders like James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose or Alasdair Mac Colla. However, many people from his clan did fight in these wars.
Hector's Capture and Fate
In 1647, Hector was on his way to help a group called the Royalists. They were being surrounded at Dunaverty Castle. But before he could reach them, he was captured.
He was taken by a group called the Covenanters, led by Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll. Sadly, Hector and his sons were executed at Whinny Hill, Kinlochkerran.
Hector's wife, Margaret, arrived soon after this sad event. She was very upset and shouted strong words at Archibald Campbell for what he had done.
After Hector, his grandson, Alexander MacAlister, became the new Chief of Clan MacAlister.
Hector's Family Life
Hector MacAlister was married to Margaret Campbell. She was the daughter of Colin Campbell, who was the 1st of Kilberry, and Helen Wood. Hector and Margaret had several children together:
- Godfrey: He was meant to be the 7th Chief of Loup. He also lost his life at Whinny Hill in 1647, at the same time as his father.
- Elizabeth: She married Alasdair Mac Colla Chiotaich MacDomhnaill. He was the son of Coll Chiotaich Mac Gillespick MacDomhnaill.
- Barbara: She married Archibald Oig Campbell. He was the son of Archibald Campbell, 5th of Inverawe, and Christiane Carswell.
- Coll: He also lost his life at Whinny Hill in 1647, at the same time as his father.
