The Eagle River is a small river in Alaska, USA. It is about 8 miles (13 km) long. The river is located in the area called Wrangell. It starts high up in the Coast Mountains at a place called Eagle Lake.
From Eagle Lake, the river flows northwest. It goes through a part of the huge Tongass National Forest. Finally, it empties into Eagle Bay. This bay is part of the Bradfield Canal. About halfway along its journey, the Eagle River also flows through a smaller lake called Little Eagle Lake.
Fun Things to Do
The Eagle River area is a great spot for outdoor adventures. The United States Forest Service helps manage the land. They offer cabins for people to use.
Eagle Lake Cabin
There is a special cabin at Eagle Lake. It is called the Eagle Lake Cabin. You can only get to this cabin by a special airplane called a floatplane. The cabin is about 1 mile (1.6 km) from where the Eagle River starts.
The cabin comes with a 14-foot (4.3 m) boat. This boat has oars and is perfect for fishing. Eagle Lake is known for its "trophy" coastal cutthroat trout. These are very large and impressive fish!
The cabin is open all year. However, sometimes the lake freezes. This means floatplanes cannot land. The cabin is quite basic. It does not have electricity or drinking water. People who love fishing or hunting often rent this cabin.
Fishing in the River
The Eagle River itself is also a great place to fish. You can find several types of fish here. These include pink salmon, chum salmon, and Dolly Varden char. Of course, you can also find coastal cutthroat trout.
You can reach these fishing spots by boat. You travel upriver from the river's mouth.
Harding River Cabin
The Forest Service also manages another cabin nearby. It is called the Harding River Cabin. This cabin is about 2 miles (3.2 km) across the Bradfield Canal from the Eagle River's mouth. People who rent the Harding River Cabin often come to fish along the Eagle River. They also hunt for waterfowl (birds like ducks and geese) on the river's muddy areas.
