The title Earl of Newburgh (say "New-bruh") is a special noble rank in Scotland. It was first given in 1660 to James Livingston by King Charles II. He also received other titles like Viscount of Kynnaird and Lord Levingston.
Some of these titles, like the Viscountcy of Newburgh, could only be passed down to male heirs. They ended when the 2nd Earl died because he had no male children. However, the Earldom of Newburgh itself was created differently. It can be passed down through both male and female family members. This means the title has moved between different families over time through marriages.
For example, the 3rd Countess of Newburgh married a man who was also known as the 5th Earl of Derwentwater. Because of this, the 4th and 5th Earls of Newburgh also held the Derwentwater title.
Later, the title passed to a descendant of the 3rd Countess's daughter. This person was the 6th Prince Giustiniani. His daughter, the 7th Countess of Newburgh, married the 4th Marquis Bandini. When she died in 1877, her son became the 8th Earl of Newburgh. In 1941, after the 9th Earl died, the title went to the Rospigliosi family, who are princes in the Holy Roman Empire.
The current, 12th Earl of Newburgh, is usually known in Italy as Prince Rospigliosi. He lives in Milan and holds several other noble titles. These include Duke of Zagarolo, Prince of Castiglione, Marquis of Giuliana, Count of Chiusa, and Baron of La Miraglia and Valcorrente. He is also Lord of Aldone, Burgio, Contessa, and Trappeto. In Italy, noble titles are not officially protected by law since 1948, so these titles are mostly honorary.
