East Bernstadt is a small community in Laurel County, Kentucky, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a special area defined by the government for counting people. East Bernstadt was once a coal town, meaning it was important for mining coal.

In 2020, about 809 people lived here. The population was 716 in 2010.

Where is East Bernstadt?

East Bernstadt is located in the northern part of Laurel County. A main road, U.S. Route 25, runs close by. This road goes southeast about 4 miles (6.4 km) to London. London is the main city in Laurel County. U.S. Route 25 also goes northwest about 12 miles (19 km) to Livingston.

Another big road, Interstate 75, also passes near East Bernstadt. However, there isn't a direct exit to the community. The closest way to get on Interstate 75 is from the Hal Rogers Parkway in London.

The total area of East Bernstadt is about 2.12 square miles (5.5 square kilometers). A very small part of this area, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.

Powerful Tornado of 2012

On the evening of March 2, 2012, a very strong tornado hit the East Bernstadt area. Weather experts rated this tornado as an EF-2. This means it had very powerful winds.

The tornado started around 7:05 PM Eastern Standard Time. It touched down about 4.3 miles (6.9 km) west of East Bernstadt. It then traveled for about 6.3 miles (10.1 km). The tornado finally lifted, or went back into the sky, about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) north-northeast of East Bernstadt. This happened around 7:12 PM EST.

The tornado was about 310 yards (283 meters) wide. It caused a lot of damage to homes and property. For example, it destroyed the home of Mike and Brenda Eversole. It also took their semi-truck and trailer. The tornado was strongest in one area, with winds estimated at 125 miles per hour (201 km/h). Sadly, some lives were lost in this powerful storm.

This tornado was part of a much larger event. Many tornadoes struck the Ohio and Tennessee Valley regions on March 2, 2012. This event is known as the Tornado outbreak of March 2–3, 2012.
