East Bunbury is divided into two main parts, each with its own history.

Rathmines: A Northern Neighborhood

Rathmines is the northern section of East Bunbury. It was named after a town in Ireland. This name was chosen by Reverend Joseph Withers. He arrived in Western Australia in 1864. Reverend Withers was a chaplain and later became the Anglican Chaplain in Bunbury.

In 1895, he divided his land into smaller blocks. This area then became known as Rathmines. Today, Rathmines is mostly a residential area. Most of the houses there were built after the 1960s.

Wollaston: Southern Living and History

Wollaston makes up the southern part of East Bunbury. It is bordered by Sandridge Road to the north and the Preston River to the east. This area is also mostly residential.

Wollaston is named after Reverend John Ramsden Wollaston. He came to Western Australia in the 1840s. He built a small wooden chapel on his land by the Preston River. This chapel opened in 1842. A churchyard was also built next to it. Many of Bunbury's early settlers are buried there.

Suburban development in Wollaston began in the 1950s and 1960s.
