Where Does the East Dart River Start?
The East Dart River begins its journey high up on Dartmoor. Its source, or starting point, is near a place called Kit Rock, on Whinney's Down. This is west of Whitehorse Hill and a bit south of Cranmere Pool. It starts at a high elevation, about 510 meters (1,673 feet) above sea level.
The River's Journey
From its source, the East Dart River flows mostly south. It then turns southwest for about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles). This journey takes it through the beautiful Dartmoor landscape.
Postbridge and the Clapper Bridge
The river eventually reaches the small village of Postbridge. Here, you can see a very old and famous clapper bridge. A clapper bridge is a special type of bridge made from large, flat stone slabs. These slabs are laid across stone piers or directly on the river banks. It looks like something from a fairy tale!
Just before Postbridge, the river has a small, sudden drop. It falls about 2 meters (6.6 feet) in a short distance. People often call this spot "Waterfall." It's a pretty sight to see the water tumbling down.
Joining the West Dart
After Postbridge, the East Dart River continues its path south. It flows past a place called Bellever. Finally, it reaches Dartmeet. This is a special spot where the East Dart River meets the West Dart River. Together, they form the main River Dart. It's like two friends meeting up to continue their adventure as one!
