The East Grand Boulevard Historic District is a special area in Detroit, Michigan. It's found along East Grand Boulevard between East Jefferson Avenue and Mack Avenue. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 because of its important history and beautiful buildings.
A Look Back in Time
In the late 1800s, city planners in Detroit wanted to make the city more beautiful. They thought wide, elegant streets would help. After many discussions, Detroit decided in the 1890s to build a "Grand Boulevard" that would go all around the city. By 1913, this tree-lined Grand Boulevard was seen as a major feature of the city. It became a very fancy place to live.
The houses built along this part of the Boulevard were some of the grandest in Detroit. However, by the mid-1920s, living on Grand Boulevard became less popular. During tough economic times and later during World War II, some of these large, elegant homes were divided into smaller apartments. Today, this section of Grand Boulevard is a mix of different uses. Only a few homes are still used by one family. Many others now serve as group homes or other community spaces.
What You Will See
The East Grand Boulevard Historic District has many large homes. It also includes a few medium-sized apartment buildings. Some of the apartment buildings you can find here are the El Tovar Apartments, the Saint Paul Manor Apartments, and the Kingston Arms Apartments. Most of the buildings in this district were built between 1900 and 1925.
