East Hills Mall has an interesting past, growing and changing over the years.
Early Days and Big Changes
The mall was built by Sherman Dreiseszun and opened in 1965. It was one of the very first malls in the central United States. When it first opened, you could find stores like Montgomery Ward, J. C. Penney, and Woolworth's.
In 1988, the mall got bigger! New major stores, called anchor stores, were added. These included Dillard's and Sears. This expansion brought even more shopping choices to the area.
New Stores and Fun Updates
Like many malls, East Hills Mall saw some stores come and go over the years. For example, Woolworth's closed in the 1990s. Montgomery Ward, another original store, closed in 2001.
From 2008 to 2009, the mall got a big makeover. One of the most exciting additions was a brand new food court. This gave shoppers more options for snacks and meals. After the renovation, many new and exciting stores opened. These included popular places like Christopher & Banks, Charlotte Russe, Justice, and Victoria's Secret. Other new stores like Off Broadway Shoes, Charming Charlie, The Children's Place, and Spencer Gifts also joined the mall.

In 2014, East Hills Mall became famous online for a short time. A back-to-school advertisement they made went viral. This means it was shared very widely on the internet. People found it funny and talked about it a lot.
In 2015, Party City opened a store near J. C. Penney. Later, in 2017, the Sears store at the mall closed its doors permanently. In 2020, another store, Gordmans, also closed. Even with these changes, East Hills Mall continues to be a central place for shopping and fun in St. Joseph.
