East Leroy is a small, quiet community located in Calhoun County, Michigan, in the United States. It's an unincorporated community, which means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger county.
East Leroy is about 11 miles (18 km) south-southwest of a bigger city called Battle Creek. Even though it's a smaller place, East Leroy has its own post office with the ZIP code 49051.
The Story of East Leroy
The first person to live in what became East Leroy was David C. Fish, who arrived in 1836. However, another person named Ira Case had already bought land in the area the year before.
David Fish's wife gave the community its name, "Leroy." She named it after their first son, Leroy Fish. The area had a large marsh, which is a type of wetland. This marsh naturally divided the community into two parts: East Leroy and West Leroy.
East Leroy's Post Office
The community's post office first opened its doors on June 28, 1852. Back then, it had a different name: Secillia. William H. Gilles was the very first postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office.
The post office closed for a short time in 1871. But don't worry, it reopened just one year later, in 1872! Then, in 1874, the post office was officially renamed East Leroy, matching the community's name.
