History of East Rochester
How Did East Rochester Begin?
The village of East Rochester was first known as Despatch. It became an official community in 1897. Despatch was a planned town built around the New York Central Railroad line. This railroad ran right through the middle of the village.
Much of the land for the village came from Walter Parce, a businessman from Fairport. This land was used to build homes for people who worked at the first big companies there. These companies were the Merchants Despatch Corporation and the Aeolian Piano Corporation. Today, the original buildings of the Aeolian Piano Corporation are still used as a shopping center and office complex called Piano Works Mall.
To show how close the village was to the city of Rochester, its name was changed. In 1906, it officially became the Village of East Rochester.
The village was originally split among three different towns: Perinton, Pittsford, and Penfield.
East Rochester's Big Win!
On August 20, 1966, a Little League baseball team from East Rochester won a huge championship! They became the Senior Little League World Champions. They beat La Habra California 4–2 in Des Moines, Iowa. East Rochester is the smallest community in the world to win either a Little League or Senior Little League World Championship.
The local post office building is also special. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's an important historical site.
What Does "Coterminous" Mean?
In 1981, East Rochester became a coterminous town and village. This means that the town and village now share the same boundaries and the same local government. It simplifies how the community is run.

The second accident happened on January 16, 2007. A CSX train carrying retail goods was traveling fast. It partly derailed at the South Lincoln underpass. Several large containers fell onto the road below. The wreckage stretched along East Maple Avenue, damaging parked cars and spilling containers into people's front yards. Again, no one was injured in this accident. The road was closed for a few days for cleanup and repairs.
