East San Diego facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

East San Diego was a small, independent city that existed for a short time, from 1912 to 1923. It was located in what is now the City Heights area within the larger city of San Diego, California. This little city had its own city hall and even its own police department. About 4,000 people lived there during its brief history.

A City of Its Own

East San Diego was formed as a separate city in 1912. This meant it had its own local government, separate from San Diego. It could make its own rules and provide services to its residents. Having its own city hall and police force showed it was a complete, self-governing community.

The Golden Rule City

East San Diego was known as the "Golden Rule City." This nickname came from its strict laws, which were meant to encourage good behavior. For example, the city did not allow gambling or alcohol. It also had a speed limit of 25 miles per hour on all its streets. These rules were part of its plan to be a very orderly and family-friendly place.

Why It Joined San Diego

Even though East San Diego had its own rules and government, it faced a big challenge. The city struggled to collect enough money from taxes to pay for all its services. Things like police, roads, and other public needs cost a lot. Because it couldn't raise enough money, East San Diego decided to join with the larger city of San Diego. This merger happened in 1923. Today, you can still find a street called Boundary Street. This street was once the actual border between East San Diego and San Diego.
