Eastern gorilla range |
The eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) is the biggest type of primate alive today. Primates are a group of mammals that includes monkeys, apes, and humans. These amazing animals are found in the forests of central Africa. Sadly, the eastern gorilla is a critically endangered species. This means there are very few left, and they are in great danger of disappearing forever.
There are two main types, or subspecies, of eastern gorillas. One is called the Eastern lowland gorilla (G. b. graueri), also known as Grauer's gorilla. The other is the mountain gorilla (G. b. beringei). Both types are facing serious threats.

What is an Eastern Gorilla?
Eastern gorillas are the largest of all gorillas. They are known for their strong bodies and gentle nature. Adult males, called silverbacks, can weigh over 400 pounds (180 kg). They get their name from the silver fur patch on their backs. Females are smaller, but still very powerful.
These gorillas live in family groups led by a dominant silverback. They spend their days eating plants like leaves, stems, and fruits. They help keep the forest healthy by spreading seeds and clearing paths.
Types of Eastern Gorillas
As mentioned, there are two subspecies of eastern gorillas:
Grauer's Gorilla (Eastern Lowland Gorilla)
Grauer's gorillas live in the lowland forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are a bit larger than mountain gorillas. Their fur is shorter and darker. There are about 3,800 Grauer's gorillas left in the wild.
Mountain Gorilla
Mountain gorillas live in the high mountains of central Africa. They have thicker, longer fur to keep them warm in the colder mountain air. There are only about 880 mountain gorillas left. They are found in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Why are Eastern Gorillas Endangered?
Both types of eastern gorillas are critically endangered. The main reason for their small numbers is illegal hunting. People hunt them for their meat or to sell their body parts. This is against the law and harms the gorilla population greatly.
Another big problem is the loss of their habitat. Forests where gorillas live are being cut down for farming, mining, and other human activities. This leaves the gorillas with less space and food.
Conservation groups and governments are working hard to protect these animals. They are trying to stop illegal hunting and save the gorillas' forest homes.
Where do Eastern Gorillas Live?
Eastern gorillas live in the forests of central Africa. Their range includes parts of:
- The Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Rwanda
- Uganda
They prefer dense forests, from lowland areas to high mountain slopes.
