The Eaton's / John Maryon Tower was a huge skyscraper that was planned for Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was going to be a super tall building with 140 floors. In 1971, a company called Eaton's teamed up with a developer named John Maryon. They wanted to build this giant tower in the College Park area of Downtown Toronto.
The main office part of the tower was designed to be 503 meters (about 1,650 feet) tall. On top of that, there would be a communication mast, like a giant antenna, that was 183 meters (about 600 feet) tall. This would make the total height of the proposed tower an amazing 686 meters (about 2,250 feet)!
Sadly, the plans for this tower were cancelled. At that time, building something so incredibly tall was thought to be impossible. The idea for this skyscraper came up two years before the famous Willis Tower (then called Sears Tower) was finished in Chicago. It was also five years before Toronto's own CN Tower was completed. If the Eaton's / John Maryon Tower had been built, it would have been the tallest building in the world for many years. It would have held that record until 2008, when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai became even taller.
A Towering Idea for Toronto
The idea of building a tall tower at this spot in Toronto wasn't new. Back in the late 1920s, a 38-storey tower was suggested for the Eaton's College Street site. This area is now known as College Park.
