Ebbe Sand's Early Life and Career
Ebbe Sand was born in Aalborg and grew up in Hadsund, Denmark. He started playing football for his hometown club, Hadsund BK, with his twin brother, Peter Sand.
Later, Ebbe moved to Copenhagen to study building engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. He and his brother Peter decided to try out for Brøndby IF. For three years, Ebbe played only a few games as an attacking midfielder. But in 1995, he got a chance to play more often and quickly became well-known. His brother Peter never played for Brøndby but became a professional player for other clubs.
Becoming a National Star
In his first big season, Ebbe scored 12 goals in 29 games. He helped Brøndby win the Danish Superliga title. Brøndby won the league again in 1997 and 1998. The year 1998 was especially good for Ebbe and Brøndby.
Ebbe won the Danish Golden Boot award, scoring 28 goals in 33 games. He also helped Brøndby win the Danish Cup, which meant they won both the league and the cup that year.
Ebbe played his first game for the Denmark national football team on April 22, 1998, against Norway. Because of his amazing 1998 season, he was chosen to play for Denmark in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
World Cup Moment and Health
Ebbe played in all five of Denmark's matches at the 1998 World Cup. He scored his first goal for Denmark in the game against Nigeria. This goal was his favorite for the national team. He came into the game as a substitute. He ran past the defenders, and Michael Laudrup passed the ball over their heads to him. Ebbe then headed the ball past a Nigerian defender and scored. It took only 16 seconds from when he entered the game to when he scored. This is still a World Cup record for a substitute!
After his success on the international stage, he was named Danish Player of the Year. In 1998, Ebbe Sand had a health issue that required surgery. He recovered quickly and was back playing football just a few weeks later.
Playing Football Abroad
After the 1998 World Cup, Ebbe played one more season for Brøndby, scoring 19 more goals. In 1999, he moved to the German club Schalke for 10 million DEM. At that time, it was the most money a Danish club had ever received for a player.
Ebbe's first season in Germany was good, as he scored 14 goals. Schalke finished 13th in the Bundesliga that year. He scored four goals in the qualification matches for the Euro 2000 tournament. He played twice for Denmark in the tournament, but Denmark did not perform well.
The 2000–01 season was much better for Ebbe Sand. Schalke finished second in the Bundesliga. They almost won the championship, but Bayern Munich scored a goal in the last minutes. Even so, Schalke qualified for the UEFA Champions League. They also won the DFB-Pokal cup. Ebbe scored 22 goals and shared the title of top scorer in Germany with Sergej Barbarez. He won the Danish Player of the Year award again in 2001.
Schalke won the DFB-Pokal again in 2002 and finished fifth in the league. Ebbe scored 11 goals that season. For the national team, he scored an impressive nine goals in ten qualification games for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, he did not play as well in the main tournament and was a substitute for the last group match, though he played three times overall.
His last years at Schalke were less successful in terms of goals. He scored six and eight goals in the next two seasons. For Denmark's run in the Euro 2004, Ebbe missed Denmark's final game due to an injury. After this, he decided to stop playing for the national team. He wanted to focus his last playing years on Schalke.
In July 2005, he announced that the coming season would be his last for Schalke. After seven years in Germany, he planned to move back to Denmark to work at the Danish Superliga club Silkeborg IF. He was even offered a chance to become a manager at Schalke, but he turned it down. For his last season at Schalke, he was chosen as team captain. He ended his Schalke career in a Bundesliga game against VfB Stuttgart on May 13, 2006. He scored a goal in Schalke's 3–2 victory and received a standing ovation from the fans when he left the field.
Management Career
After retiring as a player, Ebbe Sand joined Silkeborg IF in different roles. He then became a forwards coach for the Denmark National Team. Later, he joined Schalke 04 as an advisor.
On October 31, 2018, he was confirmed as the Director of Football for Brøndby IF. He started this job on January 1, 2019. Soon after, he made the tough decision to let go of the head coach, Alexander Zorniger, because of poor results. On July 10, 2019, Brøndby IF announced that they had hired Carsten V. Jensen as their new director of football. Ebbe was offered a new position, but he decided to leave the club instead.
Ebbe briefly managed the Denmark national team on November 11, 2020. This happened because the main coach, Kasper Hjulmand, was unable to coach due to illness. In his only match as manager, Ebbe led Denmark to a 2–0 victory over Sweden.
