Ebrahim Ashtiani (: ابراهیم اشتیانی; born January 1942 – died 24 October 2017) was a famous Iranian football player. He played as a defender. He was a key player for the Iran national football team. Most of his playing career was with the club Persepolis. His son, Ardalan Ashtiani, also became a professional football player.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out at Shahin

Ebrahim Ashtiani started his football journey with youth teams like Boostan and Poolad. These were part of the famous Shahin club. In 1964, he joined Shahin's main team. His coach, Abbas Ekrami, saw his talent.

Ebrahim quickly became a strong player. He was a regular starter after the 1966–67 season. However, Shahin faced a big problem. After a match where Ebrahim got a red card, there was a disagreement. Iran's football association decided to suspend Shahin for one year. Because of this, Shahin club officials decided to close the club.

Joining Persepolis

After Shahin was closed, Ebrahim Ashtiani and many other players moved to Persepolis. This was another big club in Tehran. In his first season with Persepolis, he played in the Asian Club Championship.

In 1970, Ebrahim returned to Persepolis after a loan spell. He played very well in a friendly match against Hamburg SV from Germany. The German club was so impressed that they offered him a contract. But Ebrahim chose to stay with Persepolis. He played for them until he retired. He also received offers from clubs like Manchester City and Al-Arabi.

Ebrahim Ashtiani helped Persepolis win many games. He even assisted the first goal in a famous 6–0 derby win against a rival team. This goal was scored by Hossein Kalani.

After the club captains Jafar Kashani and Homayoun Behzadi retired, Ebrahim became the captain. He was only 28 years old, which made him the youngest captain for Persepolis at that time. This record was later broken in 2010. Ebrahim Ashtiani retired from playing football in 1976. He was 30 years old.

Playing for Paykan (Loan)

For one season, Ebrahim Ashtiani and several other Persepolis players joined Paykan. This happened because of an agreement between the two club presidents. While playing for Paykan, Ebrahim was called to play for the Iran national football team for the first time.

International Career

Ebrahim Ashtiani had a very successful international career. He played for the Iran national football team from 1969 to 1974. He played in 35 matches for his country.

He helped Iran win the Asian Cup in Thailand in 1972. He also won a gold medal at the 1974 Asian Games football tournament. This event was held in Tehran, Iran. Ebrahim was also part of the Iranian team that played in the Olympics in Munich in 1972.

After Retirement

After he stopped playing, Ebrahim Ashtiani stayed involved in football. He worked as an assistant coach for Persepolis during the 1974–75 season. At that time, he was also the team captain.

Later, he became an assistant coach for the Iran national under-23 football team. He also managed a club called Poora for two seasons. This team played in Iran's 2nd Division. Ebrahim also served as the team manager for Persepolis for a period. He was a valuable member of the club's technical committee for many years.

Ebrahim Ashtiani passed away on 24 October 2017, after a long illness.
