Echinomastus johnsonii is a special kind of cactus. It is also known by fun names like Johnson's beehive cactus or Johnson's fishhook cactus. Sometimes, it is called Sclerocactus johnsonii, which is another scientific name for it.

This cactus grows naturally in the southwestern United States. You can find it in places like eastern California and Utah. It loves to live in dry, desert areas with lots of shrubs.

What Does It Look Like?

The Johnson's beehive cactus has a unique shape. Its body can be egg-shaped or like a cylinder. It can grow up to 25 centimeters (about 10 inches) tall. It can also be as wide as 10 centimeters (about 4 inches).

Its Spines

This cactus is covered in many spines. These spines are very dense, meaning they grow close together. Some spines are straight, while others are curved. They can be quite long, up to 4 centimeters (about 1.6 inches).

The spines come in many cool colors. You might see them in shades of yellow, gray, or even lavender. Some can be pink or red. Each small bump on the cactus, called an areole, can have up to 24 spines!

Its Flowers and Fruit

The flowers of this cactus are very pretty. They can be either yellow or pink. These flowers can grow quite large, up to 8 centimeters (about 3 inches) wide.

Sometimes, scientists divide this cactus into different types. They do this based on the color of its flowers. After the flowers, the cactus grows a fruit. This fruit is scaly and soft, and it can be up to 1.8 centimeters (about 0.7 inches) long.
