Echo, also known as Marshalls Cross Roads, is a small, unincorporated community in Dale County, Alabama, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Echo is located along Alabama State Route 27, about 10.4 miles (16.7 km) east of the city of Ozark.

History of Echo

How Echo Got Its Name

The name "Echo" has a fun story behind it! People say that early settlers were building a log cabin. As they worked, two logs hit each other, and they heard a clear echo. This sound inspired them to name their new community Echo.

Early Services and the Civil War

Echo had its own post office for many years, operating from 1851 to 1904. This was an important service for the community.

During the American Civil War, men from Echo joined the fight. Some became part of Company B, also known as "The Dale County Grays," which was part of the 33rd Regiment Alabama Infantry. Other men from Echo also served in the 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry. These groups were made up of soldiers from Alabama who fought for the Southern states.

Population of Echo

Looking at Past Numbers

Demographics is a fancy word for information about a population, like how many people live in a place. The United States government keeps track of this with a census every ten years.

In 1880, the U.S. Census recorded Echo as an unincorporated community with a population of 123 people. This gives us a peek into how many people lived there a long time ago.
