Distribution of Ectopoglossus isthminus

The Ectopoglossus confusus is a special type of frog. It belongs to the Dendrobatidae family, which includes many colorful poison dart frogs. This frog lives only in one specific area: the Chagres Highlands in Panama. This means it is endemic to that region.

You can find this frog living high up in the mountains, between 720 and 810 meters above sea level. Sometimes, people might confuse it with another frog called Colostethus panamansis, which is more common in the same area. Sadly, the Ectopoglossus confusus is facing a big problem. A type of fungus, called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, is making many frogs sick around the world, and it's affecting this frog's population too.

Meet the Ectopoglossus Confusus Frog

The Ectopoglossus confusus is a small amphibian. Amphibians are animals that can live both on land and in water. Frogs are known for their jumping ability and their unique calls. This particular frog is part of a group known for their bright colors, though not all of them are poisonous.

Where Does This Frog Live?

This frog is found only in the Chagres Highlands of Panama. This area is known for its lush forests and high elevations. The specific height where these frogs live is like being on top of a very tall building, about 720 to 810 meters high. This makes their home very unique and special.

Why is it Called "Endemic"?

When an animal is endemic to a place, it means it lives naturally only in that one specific area and nowhere else in the world. So, the Ectopoglossus confusus is a true Panamanian native! This also means its survival depends entirely on the health of its home in the Chagres Highlands.

Threats to the Ectopoglossus Confusus

Like many frogs around the world, the Ectopoglossus confusus is facing serious challenges. One of the biggest threats is a disease caused by a fungus. This fungus can be very harmful to amphibians.

The Fungus Problem

The fungus that affects these frogs is called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, often shortened to Bd. This fungus causes a disease called chytridiomycosis. It attacks the skin of frogs, which is very important for them to breathe and drink. When frogs get this disease, they can become very sick and even die. This fungus has caused problems for many different frog species all over the planet.

Why is This Fungus Dangerous?

The Bd fungus spreads easily in wet environments where frogs live. It can quickly move from one frog to another, or even be carried by water. Because frogs need their skin to stay healthy, the fungus makes it hard for them to absorb water and electrolytes, which are vital for their bodies to work. Scientists are working hard to understand and fight this disease to protect frogs like the Ectopoglossus confusus.
