Eddie Johnstone's Hockey Journey

Starting in Junior Hockey

Eddie Johnstone began his hockey career playing major junior for the Medicine Hat Tigers. This team was part of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). He played with them from 1971 to 1974. During his time with the Tigers, Eddie was a very strong player. He scored over 100 points in two seasons in a row. This showed he was great at both scoring goals and helping his teammates score.

Joining the Pros

Because of his excellent performance, Eddie was chosen in two different drafts in 1974. The New York Rangers picked him 104th overall in the 1974 NHL amateur draft for the NHL. The Michigan Stags also drafted him 78th overall in the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft for the WHA.

Eddie started his professional career in the World Hockey Association (WHA) during the 1974–75 season. He played 23 games for the Michigan Stags, who later became the Baltimore Blades. He also played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Providence Reds.

Playing in the NHL

Eddie Johnstone began his National Hockey League (NHL) career in the 1975–76 season. He scored 3 points in his first 10 games with the New York Rangers. He continued to play for the Rangers until the end of the 1982–83 season.

After his time with the Rangers, Eddie was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. He moved to the Red Wings along with two other players, Ron Duguay and Eddie Mio. In return, the Rangers received Mike Blaisdell, Willie Huber, and Mark Osborne. Eddie played for the Red Wings and their AHL team, the Adirondack Red Wings. He retired from playing hockey in 1987.

Eddie Johnstone's Achievements

Eddie Johnstone earned several honors during his hockey career.

  • In 1977, he was named to the AHL First All-Star Team. This means he was considered one of the best players in the American Hockey League that season.
  • He was chosen to play in the NHL All-Star Game in 1981. This is a special game where the best players from different NHL teams play against each other.
  • In a 2009 book called 100 Ranger Greats, Eddie was ranked as the 65th best player of all time for the New York Rangers. This book looked at 901 players who had played for the team.
