Biography
Alec: Stories from His Life
Eddie Campbell started making comics about his own life in the late 1970s. These stories became known as Alec. The main character, Alec MacGarry, is a lot like Eddie himself.
At first, he made these comics himself and sold them at comic shows. Later, they were published in magazines like Escape Magazine.
In the 1980s, several collections of his Alec stories came out. These included Alec, Love and Beerglasses, and Doggie in the Window.
When he moved to Australia in 1986, he continued to create comics. In 1990, many of his early Alec stories were put together in a book called The Complete Alec. This book won an award for Best Graphic Novel Collection.
Later Alec books explored different ideas. Graffiti Kitchen (1993) was a high point for him. Alec: How To Be An Artist (2000) looked at how art is made and his own journey as an artist.
In 2006, he published The Fate of the Artist. In this book, his family and friends try to find him after he seems to disappear.
All the Alec stories, except The Fate of the Artist, were collected in a huge book called Alec: The Years Have Pants in 2009. In 2012, he continued his life stories with The Lovely Horrible Stuff, which playfully explores our relationship with money.
Bacchus: The God of Wine in Modern Times
In the mid-1980s, many independent black and white comics became popular. Eddie Campbell joined in with his series Deadface. This comic told the story of Bacchus, the ancient Greek god of wine and fun. It showed how Bacchus and a few other Greek gods survived into the present day.
The series was later called Bacchus. Eddie Campbell continued to make these stories for many years. The whole Bacchus story is now available in two large books.
From Hell: A Famous Graphic Novel
Starting in 1989, Eddie Campbell drew the pictures for the famous graphic novel From Hell. This book was written by Alan Moore.
From Hell tells a long and detailed story about a well-known historical mystery. It was first published in parts and later collected into one big book.
Self-Publishing His Own Comics
In 1995, Eddie Campbell started his own publishing company called Eddie Campbell Comics. He wanted to publish his own work.
Through his company, he published more Bacchus stories and collected his Alec comics into graphic novels. He also published the collected edition of From Hell.
After a few years, he stopped self-publishing in 2003. It was becoming harder to sell his comics, and his distributor had problems.
New Works with First Second and Top Shelf
After closing his own company, Eddie Campbell started working with other publishers. He worked with First Second Books and Top Shelf Productions.
In 2007, First Second published The Black Diamond Detective Agency. This was a detective story set in 1899, about a private detective agency solving a mystery about a train.
In 2008, he worked with Dan Best on The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard. This book followed the lives of circus performers and historical figures. Critics really liked it, calling it "truly amazing and fun."
For Top Shelf, he published the big Alec: The Years Have Pants book in 2009. In 2010, he worked with Daren White on The Playwright.
In 2012, Top Shelf also published The Lovely Horrible Stuff. This book continued his autobiographical stories, using new art styles with color and collage.
Comics on iPad
In 2011, some of his older "Dapper John" stories were released as an iPad app. This allowed people to read his comics on their tablets.
Personal life
Eddie Campbell moved to Brisbane, Australia, in 1986 and lived there for 30 years.
He is now married to author and artist Audrey Niffenegger. They live in Chicago. Eddie Campbell's adult daughter, Hayley Campbell, is a writer and journalist.
