About Eddie Campbell's Life and Work
Eddie Campbell started making comics about his own life in the late 1970s. These stories featured a character named Alec MacGarry, who was like Eddie himself. He first made these comics for fun groups and then as small, copied booklets. He sold them at comic events.
The Alec Stories
In 1984, a collection of his Alec stories was published. More collections followed, like Love and Beerglasses and Doggie in the Window. In 1986, Eddie Campbell moved to Australia. While there, he published more comics, including his first Bacchus stories.
In 1990, many of his Alec stories were put together in a book called The Complete Alec. This book won an award in 1991. Later, in 2000, this material was republished as The King Canute Crowd. He continued to create more Alec stories, exploring his artistic journey and even his own disappearance in a playful way. All the Alec stories, except for one, were collected in a big book called Alec: The Years Have Pants in 2009. In 2012, he continued his autobiographical theme with The Lovely Horrible Stuff, which explores our relationship with money.
The Bacchus Series
In the mid-1980s, many independent comics became popular. Eddie Campbell joined in by creating Deadface, a series about Bacchus, the Greek god of wine. This story showed Bacchus and other Greek gods who were still alive in modern times. The series was later reprinted and continued under the name Bacchus. The entire Bacchus story is now available in two large books.
Working on From Hell
Starting in 1989, Eddie Campbell drew the pictures for a big graphic novel called From Hell. This story was about the famous mystery of Jack the Ripper. The writer, Alan Moore, chose Eddie Campbell because his realistic drawing style made the story feel very real and didn't make the violence seem exciting. From Hell was published in parts over several years and was later collected into a complete book.
Publishing His Own Comics
In 1995, Eddie Campbell started his own publishing company called Eddie Campbell Comics. He published his Bacchus series, which included new and old Alec stories. He also published the collected edition of From Hell and other works. However, in 2003, he stopped his publishing company.
Working with Other Publishers
After closing his own company, Eddie Campbell started working with other publishers. He continued the Alec series with The Fate of the Artist. He also adapted a screenplay into a comic called The Black Diamond Detective Agency in 2007. This story is set in 1899 and follows a detective agency investigating a train conspiracy.
In 2008, he worked with Dan Best on The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard, a story about circus performers. Later, he published more works with Top Shelf Productions, including the large collection of his Alec stories and The Playwright, a collaboration with Daren White. His more recent works, like The Lovely Horrible Stuff, use new art styles, including color and digital techniques.
Personal Life
Eddie Campbell moved to Brisbane, Australia, in 1986 and lived there for thirty years. He is now married to author and artist Audrey Niffenegger and lives in Chicago. His adult daughter, Hayley Campbell, is a writer and journalist.
