Geometrie carre
A square with four sides

In Geometry, a side is a straight line that forms part of a flat shape. Think of it as one of the edges of a shape. Shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles are made from straight lines. Each of these lines is called a side.

For example, look at the square in the picture. It has four sides. These sides are shown as black straight lines. They connect the corners of the square. The four sides are:

  • the black straight line from A to B
  • the black straight line from B to C
  • the black straight line from C to D
  • the black straight line from D to A

Sides in Everyday Life

The word "side" can also mean a part of something. It helps us describe where things are or what part of an object we are talking about.

Your Body's Sides

When we talk about a human body, the right side means all the parts of your body that are on the right half. This includes your right arm, right leg, and the right half of your face. The left side is the same, but for the left half of your body.

Inside and Outside

The words "inside" and "outside" tell us about where something is.

  • If something is inside, it means it is within a container or an area. For example, "The cookies are inside the container." This means the cookies are in the container. The space within the container is its inside.
  • Outside is the opposite of inside. It means something is not in the container or area. If the cookies are outside the container, they are not in it.
