Edgewood Manor is a beautiful historic house located in Clarksburg, West Virginia. You can find it on the east side of US Route 19 and State Route 20 North. It's just a short distance from the West Pike Street Exit off Route 50. This house was built in 1914 and is known for its special design. There is another, much older house with the same name, Edgewood (Bunker Hill, West Virginia), located far away in another part of West Virginia.

Who Lived at Edgewood Manor?

Edgewood Manor was built for Haze Morgan (1876-1952). He was a lawyer who lived in the Clarksburg area. Haze Morgan came from a very important family in West Virginia's history.

Haze Morgan's Famous Relatives

Haze Morgan worked as a lawyer with John W. Davis. John W. Davis was the only person from West Virginia ever chosen by a major political party to run for President of the United States. He ran against Calvin Coolidge but did not win.

Haze Morgan also had two very famous great-uncles:

  • Colonel Morgan Morgan: He was the first known white settler in what is now West Virginia. He built a cabin near Bunker Hill way back in 1724. Haze Morgan even helped set up a monument about him!
  • General Zackquill Morgan: He was the founder of Morgantown in 1766.

General Zackquill Morgan's grandson was Francis Harrison Pierpont. He is so important that he represents West Virginia in the National Statuary Hall Collection in Washington D.C. Francis Harrison Pierpont became an abolitionist, meaning he was against slavery. He decided this after visiting Mississippi before the American Civil War. He did not want Virginia to leave the United States. He strongly supported President Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, he served as governor of the Virginia counties that later became West Virginia. After the war, during the Reconstruction Era, he was also the governor of Virginia.

What Does Edgewood Manor Look Like?

The famous architect Stephen Warder Ford designed Edgewood Manor. Haze Morgan hired him to build it as his home. The house was finished in 1914. Its name, "Edgewood," comes from the fact that it was built by workers right at the edge of the woods.

Edgewood Manor is a 2½-story house made of light brown brick. It is built in the Craftsman style, which is known for its strong, natural look. The house has a sloped roof covered with tiles. On the west side, there's a special window area called a dormer, also with a sloped roof. Three chimneys rise above the roof.

Why is its Architecture Special?

Edgewood Manor is considered a great example of an architect-designed Craftsman-style home. Because of its unique design, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important building that should be protected. The year 1914, when it was completed, is very important to its history. The house still looks much like it did when it was first built, with only small changes over time.

The Grounds of Edgewood Manor

The land around Edgewood Manor is also very special. It has many old trees that were planted in the 1920s. These include different types of trees like Pin Oaks, Butternuts, several kinds of Pines, Hawthornes, and Beech trees. There are also large rhododendron bushes.

One very special tree is a Native American chestnut. It's a huge, beautiful tree from before a disease affected most chestnut trees. Two of the trees on the property are even registered as state and national champions because of their size and age! The estate also has a peaceful Koi pond.
