The Edificio Carrión, also known as the Edificio Capitol, is a famous building in the center of Madrid, Spain. It's a great example of a special kind of building design called expressionist architecture, which is part of a bigger style called rationalist architecture. This building has become a well-known symbol of both the Gran Vía street and the city of Madrid itself.

Discover the Capitol Building

This amazing building stands 54 meters (about 177 feet) tall. You can find it right on the corner where the busy Gran Vía street meets the Calle de Jacometrezo [es]. It's also very close to Callao Square, a popular spot in Madrid.

Who Designed This Landmark?

The design of the Edificio Capitol was given to two talented architects: Vicente Eced Eced and Luis Martínez Feduchi. They started working on the building on April 11, 1931. Their ideas were inspired by a group of artists called the November Group, especially by the works of a famous architect named Erich Mendelsohn.

When Was It Finished?

After two years of construction, the Edificio Capitol was officially opened on October 15, 1933. It quickly became an important part of Madrid's skyline.

A Star in Art and Film

The Edificio Capitol is so famous that it has appeared in many artworks. Its unique front, called the façade, was even a main setting in the Spanish movie El día de la bestia (The Day of the Beast). This shows how much the building means to the city's culture.

A Protected Treasure

In 2018, the building was given a special title: Bien de Interés Cultural. This means it's recognized as an important cultural heritage site in Spain and is protected by law. It's like a national treasure!
