The Edisto Island Baptist Church was first built in 1818. It was a two-story building made of wood, with a roof that had a medium slope.
Over the years, the church grew. Around 1865, an addition was built that made the church twice as big. This was a significant expansion.
Later, in 1880, a special front entrance was added. This was a two-story "portico," which is like a fancy porch with columns that makes the building look grander.
