Edith Helen Major (born February 15, 1867 – died March 17, 1951) was an important Irish woman who worked to improve education. She was known as an "educationalist" because she dedicated her life to teaching and leading schools. She also received a special award called the CBE, which stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire, for her great work.

A Life in Education

Edith Major was born in Lisburn, a town in Northern Ireland. She loved learning and went to two excellent schools. First, she studied at Methodist College Belfast. After that, she attended Girton College, Cambridge, which is a famous university in England.

Early Teaching Career

After finishing her own education, Edith Major started her career as a teacher.

  • From 1891 to 1900, she worked as an Assistant Mistress at Blackheath High School. She learned a lot from the Headmistress there, Florence Gadesden.
  • Then, she became the Headmistress of Putney High School. She led this school for almost 20 years, from 1891 to 1910.
  • After that, she moved to King Edward VI High School for Girls. She was the Headmistress there from 1910 until 1925.

Leading Girton College

Edith Major's career reached a high point when she returned to her old university. From 1925 to 1931, she served as the Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge. This was a very important leadership role. It meant she was in charge of the entire college.

A painting of Edith Major by the artist James Sleator can be found at Girton College. This shows how important she was to the college.
