Edmond Hébert (1812-1890)

Edmond Hébert was an important French geologist. He was born in Villefargau, France, on June 12, 1812. He spent his life studying rocks and the Earth's history. Hébert helped us understand more about ancient times. He passed away in Paris on April 4, 1890.

Becoming a Geologist

Edmond Hébert went to school at the College de Meaux. He also studied at the École Normale in Paris. This was a famous school for teachers. In 1836, he became a professor in Meaux. Later, he taught chemistry and physics at the École Normale. By 1841, he was teaching geology there.

Studying Earth's Layers

In 1857, Edmond Hébert earned a special degree. He then became a geology professor at the Sorbonne. This is a famous university in Paris. He was a very good teacher. He also worked hard in the field. He studied many different rock layers.

Discovering Ancient Times

Hébert added a lot to our knowledge of the Jurassic period. This was a time when dinosaurs lived. He also studied older rock layers. He paid special attention to the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. These periods came after the Jurassic. He looked at rock formations in France. He also compared them to rocks in England and southern Europe.

Understanding Chalk Layers

Edmond Hébert was the first to organize Chalk layers. He used fossils to do this. Fossils are remains of ancient life. By studying them, he could divide the Chalk into different zones. This helped other scientists understand Earth's history better. In his later years, he was seen as the top geologist in France.

Awards and Recognition

Edmond Hébert received many honors. In 1877, he became a member of the Académie des sciences. This is a very important science academy. In 1885, he was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour. This is a high award in France. He was also president of the Geological Society of France three times.
