During his freshman year, he had to stop playing after only six games. This was because of ongoing knee problems. In January 2017, during his junior year, he got another injury. At that time, he was averaging almost 15 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds per game.
After his junior season, on March 28, 2017, Sumner decided to enter the 2017 NBA draft. This meant he was ready to become a professional basketball player.
Professional Basketball Journey
Joining the Indiana Pacers (2017–2021)
On June 23, 2017, Edmond Sumner was chosen in the 2017 NBA draft. The New Orleans Pelicans picked him as the 52nd overall player. However, he was quickly traded to the Indiana Pacers for money.
On July 5, 2017, Sumner signed a special contract with the Pacers. It was called a two-way contract. This was the first time a player picked in the second round of the draft signed such a deal. In his first year (2017–18), he didn't play much for the Pacers. He spent a lot of time playing for their G-League team, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Sumner continued to have limited playing time at the start of the 2018–19 season. But then, his teammate Victor Oladipo got a serious injury. This meant Sumner's playing time increased a lot. He even got his first start in an NBA game against the Golden State Warriors. On February 11, 2019, he signed a regular NBA contract with the Pacers. This new deal was for two years.
On July 29, Sumner signed another contract with the Pacers. This one was for three years and worth about $6.48 million.
During the 2020–21 season, Sumner played well. He averaged 7.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He shot 52.5 percent from the field. In April 2021, he scored over 20 points in two games in a row. These games were against the Detroit Pistons and the Orlando Magic. On September 9, 2021, it was announced that Sumner had a torn Achilles tendon. This injury meant he would be out of the game for a long time.
Playing for the Brooklyn Nets (2022–2023)
On October 6, 2021, Sumner was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He was traded along with a future draft pick. In return, the Pacers received the draft rights to another player. Four days later, the Nets decided to release him.
However, on July 8, 2022, Sumner signed with the Nets again. He played for them during the 2022–23 season.
On July 15, 2023, Sumner was released by the Nets once more. On September 29, 2023, he signed with the Charlotte Hornets. But he was released by them on October 24, 2023.
