Playing in College
Edmond Sumner played basketball for the Xavier Musketeers at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He was there for three years, from 2014 to 2017. During his first year, he played only six games because of ongoing knee problems.
In January 2017, he got injured again during a game against St. John's. This injury kept him from playing for the rest of that season. At that time, he was scoring about 14.9 points per game. On March 28, 2017, Edmond decided to enter the 2017 NBA draft to become a professional player.
Playing Professionally
Time with the Indiana Pacers
On June 23, 2017, Edmond was chosen by the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA draft. He was the 52nd player picked overall. Soon after, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers for money. On July 5, 2017, Sumner signed a special "two-way contract" with the Pacers. This type of contract allows a player to play for both an NBA team and its minor league team. For Edmond, this meant he also played for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the G-League.
In the 2017–18 season, Edmond did not play much for the Pacers. He spent a lot of time with the Mad Ants. His playing time stayed low at the start of the 2018–19 season. But then, his teammate Victor Oladipo had a serious leg injury. This meant Edmond got to play more often. He even started his first NBA game against the Golden State Warriors. In February 2019, he signed a regular NBA contract with the Pacers.
In July 2019, Edmond signed a new, longer contract with the Pacers. During the 2020–21 season, he played well, scoring about 7.5 points per game. In April 2021, he scored 20 points or more in two games in a row. However, in September 2021, it was announced that he had a serious ankle injury. This injury kept him from playing for a long time.
Time with the Brooklyn Nets
On October 6, 2021, Edmond Sumner was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets also received a future draft pick in the trade. Four days later, the Nets decided to release him from their team.
However, on July 8, 2022, Edmond signed with the Nets again. He played for them during the 2022–23 season. On July 15, 2023, the Nets released him once more. Later, in September 2023, he signed with the Charlotte Hornets, but they also released him in October.
Playing in Lithuania
On November 29, 2023, Edmond Sumner moved to Europe to play basketball. He signed with Žalgiris Kaunas, a team in the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL). This team also plays in the EuroLeague, which is a top basketball league in Europe. While playing for Žalgiris, he helped them win the Lithuanian King Mindaugas Cup in 2024.
Playing in China
On August 23, 2024, Edmond Sumner signed with the Sichuan Blue Whales. This team plays in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). In the 2024–25 season, he was the top scorer in the CBA. He averaged 36 points per game, along with 6.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 2.1 steals.
