Edmondo Fabbri (born November 16, 1921 – died July 8, 1995) was an Italian football player and coach. He was known for being a fast player. He mostly played as a winger, which is a player who plays on the sides of the field.
Playing Career
Edmondo Fabbri was born in Castel Bolognese, Italy. He started his football journey with Imola in 1938. Over his career, he played for many different teams.
He played for Forlì in 1939. Then he joined Atalanta for two seasons, from 1940 to 1942. He also played for Inter in 1942. After a short time with Faenza in 1944, he returned to Inter in 1945.
In 1946, he moved to Sampdoria. After one season, he went back to Atalanta for three more years. Later, he played for Brescia in 1950. From 1951 to 1955, he played for Parma. With Parma, he helped the team win the 1953–54 Serie C title. Serie C is one of the professional football leagues in Italy. He finished his playing career with Mantova in 1957. He also played one game for the Italian youth national team in 1942.
Managerial Career
After he stopped playing, Fabbri started coaching. His first coaching job was with Mantova in 1957. This was the same team he had played for last. At that time, Mantova was in Serie D, which is a lower football league in Italy.
Fabbri was very successful with Mantova. In just four years, he led the team all the way to Serie A. Serie A is the top football league in Italy. He won the Serie D title in 1958 and the Serie C title in 1959. Because of his great work, he won the "Seminatore d'Oro" award in 1962. This award is given to the best coach in Italy.
After winning the award, Fabbri became the head coach of the Italy national football team. He coached the national team from 1962 to 1966. During this time, Italy won 18 games, drew 6, and lost 5. He led the team in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. However, Italy was surprisingly knocked out in the first round after losing to North Korea. After this, Fabbri left his role as national team coach.
Fabbri continued to coach many other famous Italian clubs. He coached Torino twice, from 1967 to 1969 and again from 1974 to 1975. He also coached Bologna from 1969 to 1972. With Torino, he won the Coppa Italia in 1968. The Coppa Italia is a major football cup competition in Italy. He won another Coppa Italia with Bologna in 1970. He also won the Anglo-Italian League Cup with Bologna in the same year. Later, he coached Ternana in 1976 and Pistoiese from 1980 to 1981. He helped Pistoiese reach Serie A.
Death
Edmondo Fabbri passed away in Castel San Pietro Terme on July 8, 1995.
