Club History
Early Years and Foundation
The club began in 1925 as Terni F.B.C. This happened when two local teams, Terni Football Club and Unione Sportiva Ternana, joined together. They quickly moved up to the II Division in 1926 and then to the I Division (now known as Serie B) just one year later.
Moving Up and Down the Leagues
The club faced money problems and had to stop playing for a while. It was restarted in 1929 as Unione Fascista Ternana. After stopping again in 1933, the club returned in 1935. It was named Polisportiva Mario Umberto Borzacchini after a famous racing car driver from Terni. In 1938, the new club was promoted to Serie C.
After World War II, football started again in Italy in 1946. Ternana played in Serie B but was relegated to Serie C in 1949 and then to IV Serie in 1950. They went down to a regional league in 1953 but returned to IV Serie in 1955. The team made it back to Serie C in 1964 and then to Serie B in 1968, led by coach Corrado Viciani.
Reaching Serie A and Challenges
In 1972, Ternana won Serie B and reached Serie A for the first time, again with Viciani as coach. However, they were relegated quickly in their first season, winning only three out of 30 matches. In 1974, Ternana earned promotion to Serie A again. But once more, they were relegated soon after.
In the years that followed, Ternana did not return to the top league. They were relegated to Serie C in 1980. Despite this, they had a great run in the 1979–80 Coppa Italia, reaching the semi-finals. They were eventually knocked out by Roma.
During the 1980s, Ternana played in Serie C1 and Serie C2. The club faced serious financial issues and went bankrupt in 1987. After being managed by an official liquidator, the club was bought in 1988. They won promotion to Serie C in 1988–89. Ternana then won Serie C1 in 1992, returning to Serie B. However, more money problems followed, and the team went officially bankrupt again.
Restarting and Returning to Serie B
In the summer of 1993, the club was restarted as Ternana Calcio. They had to begin again from Serie D. In their first Serie D season, they finished third. They missed promotion again the next year but were later allowed to join Serie C2.
In 1996–97 and 1997–98, with a new president and Luigi Delneri as coach, Ternana achieved two promotions in a row. This brought them back to Serie B.
Recent Years: Serie B and Lega Pro
Ternana played in Serie B from 1998 until 2006. In 2004, they almost got promoted to Serie A, finishing just four points behind Fiorentina.
In 2006, they were relegated to Serie C1 (which later became Lega Pro Prima Divisione). In the 2010–11 season, the club was relegated to Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. However, they were allowed to return to Lega Pro Prima Divisione on August 4, 2011.
In the next season, 2011–12, Ternana was promoted from Lega Pro Prima Divisione to Serie B. They managed to stay in Serie B for six seasons, avoiding relegation.
In June 2017, Stefano Bandecchi became the owner of the club. Ternana was relegated from Serie B on May 12, 2018. They returned to Serie B after three years. In their last season in Serie C, Ternana was very strong, finishing 22 points ahead of Catanzaro.
Team Colors and Badge
The team's colors are red and green. Ternana is the only professional football team in Italy that uses a red and green combination for its kit.
Supporters
The main fan group of Ternana Calcio is called "The Ultras". They are also known as "The Freak Brothers". Like many Italian fan groups, they are often linked with left-wing politics.
