Ternana Calcio, often just called Ternana, is an Italian football club. It is based in the city of Terni, in the Umbria region of Italy. Currently, the team plays in Serie C, which is one of Italy's professional football leagues.
The club was first started in 1925. It was then restarted in 1993 after some difficulties. Ternana has played in Italy's top league, Serie A, two times. These were in the 1972–73 and 1974–75 seasons. They have also played in Serie B 28 times.
Ternana was the first team from the Umbria region to reach Serie A. They have a big local rivalry with Perugia. Ternana plays its home games at the Stadio Libero Liberati.

History of Ternana Calcio
How the Club Started
The club began in 1925. It was formed when two local teams, Terni Football Club and Unione Sportiva Ternana, joined together. The new club was called Terni F.B.C. They quickly moved up through the leagues, reaching the II Division in 1926 and the I Division (now known as Serie B) just one year later.
Moving Up and Down the Leagues
The club faced money problems and had to close down in 1929. It was then restarted as Unione Fascista Ternana. This name was common for clubs during that time in Italy. The club closed again in 1933.
In 1935, football started again for the club under a new name, Polisportiva Mario Umberto Borzacchini. This name honored a famous racing car driver from Terni who had passed away. In 1938, the new club was promoted to Serie C. They almost got promoted again the next year.
After World War II, football in Italy restarted in 1946. Ternana played in Serie B. They nearly got promoted to Serie A for two years in a row. However, they were then moved down to Serie C in 1949 and IV Serie in 1950. In 1953, they were moved down again to Promozione, a regional league. After two years there, they returned to IV Serie in 1955. The club made it back to Serie C in 1964 and then to Serie B in 1968. This was under the coach Corrado Viciani.
Playing in Serie A and Later Challenges (1970s–1993)
In 1972, Ternana won Serie B and reached Serie A for the very first time. Coach Viciani was still leading the team. But the club found it tough in Serie A. They were quickly moved back down after winning only three games out of 30.
In 1974, while back in Serie B, Ternana managed to finish in a top spot again. This earned them their second promotion to Serie A. Sadly, this was also followed by another move back down. In the years that followed, even with famous coaches like Cesare Maldini, Ternana could not get back to the top league. Instead, they were moved down to Serie C in 1980. This happened even though they had a great run in the 1979–80 Coppa Italia, reaching the semi-finals.
During the 1980s, Ternana played in Serie C1 and Serie C2. Then, on December 12, 1987, the club faced serious money problems and officially went bankrupt. An official manager helped the club finish the season and avoid being moved down further. In 1988, a group led by Gaspare Gambino bought the club. They won promotion to Serie C in 1988–89 after winning a playoff game. Ternana then won Serie C1 in 1992, returning to Serie B. But more money problems stopped them from signing new players. At the end of that season, the team finished last, and Ternana officially went bankrupt again.
Restarting and Returning to Serie B (1993–1998)
In the summer of 1993, the club was restarted and named Ternana Calcio. They had to begin again from Serie D, a lower league. In their first Serie D season, Ternana almost got promoted but finished third. They had another try but lost to Viterbese. Even so, the club was later allowed to join Serie C2 because there was an open spot.
In the 1996–97 and 1997–98 seasons, with a new president and Luigi Delneri as coach, Ternana won two promotions in a row. This brought them back to Serie B.
Recent Years (1998–Present)
Ternana played in Serie B from 1998 until 2006. In 2004, they nearly got promoted to Serie A, finishing just four points behind Fiorentina. In 2006, they were moved down to Serie C1 (which later became Lega Pro Prima Divisione).
In the 2010–11 season, the club was moved down to Lega Pro Seconda Divisione after losing a play-out game. However, they were allowed back into Lega Pro Prima Divisione on August 4, 2011, to fill open spots. In the next season, 2011–12, they were promoted from Lega Pro Prima Divisione to Serie B.
Back in Serie B, Ternana managed to stay in the league for six seasons in a row, avoiding being moved down. In June 2017, Stefano Bandecchi bought the club. He owned the Università degli Studi Niccolò Cusano, a private university. The club even added "Unicusano" to its name and crest for a short time.
Ternana was moved down from Serie B on May 12, 2018. They returned to Serie B after three years. In their last season in Serie C, Ternana was very strong. They finished 22 points ahead of the second-place team.
