Luciano Spinosi (born May 9, 1950) is a former Italian football player and coach. He played as a defender and was known for his strong and reliable play on the field. After he stopped playing, he became a football coach.
Playing for Clubs
Luciano Spinosi played for several famous Italian football clubs during his career. He spent many years with A.S. Roma and Juventus FC, which are two of Italy's biggest teams. He also played for Hellas Verona F.C., A.C. Milan, and A.C. Cesena.
Playing for Italy
Luciano Spinosi also played for the Italy national football team, which is often called the 'Azzurri'. He played 19 times for the main national team between 1971 and 1974. Before that, he played 3 times for the Italy under-21 team from 1969 to 1971.
His first game for the under-21 team was in November 1969. He made his debut for the senior national team in June 1971 in a game against Sweden. His only goal for Italy came in June 1972 during a match against Romania. Spinosi was also part of the Italian team that played in the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
How He Played
Spinosi was a very tough and dependable defender. He was known for tackling hard and always staying focused during games. Early in his career, he usually played as a right-back, which is a defender on the side of the field. Later, he often played as a "stopper" or centre-back, meaning he would closely mark an opponent's player.
He was good at defending both when players were assigned specific opponents to mark (man-marking) and when they covered certain areas of the field (zonal marking). Spinosi also had good ball control, which allowed him to help his team attack by running forward along the side of the field. Sometimes, he even played as a wide midfielder. Because he was tall, he was excellent at heading the ball and often used this skill to score goals when he went into the penalty area.
Family Life
Luciano Spinosi's older brother, Enrico Spinosi, was also a professional football player. To tell them apart, Enrico was often called Spinosi I and Luciano was called Spinosi II.
