Cristiano Lucarelli (born 4 October 1975) is an Italian football manager and a former player. He played as a forward, scoring many goals throughout his career.

Cristiano Lucarelli's Club Career

Cristiano Lucarelli was born in Livorno, Italy. He became famous for his strong connection to his hometown club, Livorno.

Playing for Livorno

Before joining Livorno, Lucarelli played for many different teams. These included a short time in Spain with Valencia. In 2003, he signed with Livorno, the team from his hometown.

He had a huge impact when Livorno returned to Serie A, Italy's top league. In the 2003–04 season, he scored 29 goals in 38 matches. This made him a hero to Livorno fans. The next season, he was the top goalscorer in Serie A with 24 goals. Livorno finished in eighth place that year.

Lucarelli was known for his loyalty to Livorno. He turned down bigger offers from other clubs. He once said, "Some football players pay a billion for a Ferrari or a yacht; with that money, I bought myself Livorno’s shirt. That's all." He scored his 100th Serie A goal with a hat-trick against Catania in 2007.

Leaving and Returning to Livorno

Later, his relationship with the club became difficult. This was due to disagreements with the club president. Lucarelli felt hurt by some fan criticism and decided to leave Livorno.

On 13 July 2007, Lucarelli joined Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. He was the first Italian player to play in Ukraine. He scored his first European goal for Shakhtar in a Champions League qualifying game.

In January 2008, Lucarelli moved back to Italy to play for Parma. His younger brother, Alessandro, also joined Parma later. His time at Parma was not as successful. The team was relegated to Serie B. He stayed with Parma to help them get back to Serie A.

In July 2009, Lucarelli made an exciting return to Livorno on loan from Parma. He played for Livorno again during the 2009–10 season. After Livorno was relegated to Serie B, he went back to Parma.

In August 2010, he was loaned to Napoli. After two seasons with Napoli, he decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2011–12 season.

Cristiano Lucarelli's International Career

Lucarelli played for the Italian national team six times between 2005 and 2007. He scored 3 goals for his country. He was also part of the Italian team at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

He scored his first international goal in a friendly match against Serbia and Montenegro in 2005. He was not chosen for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However, he was called back to the national team by the new coach, Roberto Donadoni.

Lucarelli also played in some Euro 2008 qualifying matches. He came on as a substitute in games against the Faroe Islands and France. He scored two goals in a friendly win against South Africa in October 2007.

Cristiano Lucarelli's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Lucarelli began his coaching career. He started as a youth coach at Parma in 2012. He coached players aged 15 to 17.

In June 2013, he became the head coach of Perugia. However, he left before the season started due to disagreements. He then coached Viareggio and Pistoiese.

In October 2016, he took over Messina. He helped the club avoid relegation despite financial problems. After leaving Messina, he became the head coach of Catania in July 2017.

He later managed Livorno for a short time in 2018. He returned to Catania in October 2019. In August 2020, he joined Ternana in Serie C. Under his leadership, Ternana won the Serie C championship in 2021 and were promoted to Serie B.

He coached Ternana for a while in Serie B. He was dismissed but then re-appointed twice. In November 2023, he returned to coach Catania again. He was removed from this role a few months later in March 2024.
