Cosenza Calcio 1914 was a professional Italian football club. It was based in the city of Cosenza, which is in the Calabria region of Italy.

The club started in 1926 as Cosenza Foot-Ball Club. The year 1914 is important because it refers to the first historic football match played by a team from Cosenza. This match happened on February 23, 1914. The club was removed from the professional leagues in 2003. It was allowed back into a lower league, Serie D, a year later. In 2005, the club officially closed down. This ended its 91-year history.

After Cosenza Calcio 1914 closed, other clubs tried to take its place. From 2003 to 2007, a club called A.S. Cosenza Calcio claimed to be its successor. Then, in 2007, another club named Fortitudo Cosenza moved to Cosenza. It changed its name to Cosenza Calcio 1914 Srl in 2008. However, this club also closed in 2011. A new club, Nuova Cosenza Calcio, was then started.

Early Years and Success in Serie B

The club was founded in 1926. It was known as Cosenza Foot-Ball Club. The team spent many years playing in professional leagues. They were often in Serie B, which is the second-highest football league in Italy. Many famous players started their careers at Cosenza.

Cosenza Calcio also won the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1983. This was a special tournament between English and Italian teams. In the 1980s and 1990s, Cosenza almost made it to Italy's top league, Serie A, several times. For example, in 1989, they finished with the same points as other teams. But they couldn't go to the promotion playoff because of their head-to-head results. In the 1991–92 season, Cosenza finished fifth. They were only two points away from being promoted.

Challenges and Later Years

After these successful times, the club faced difficulties. In July 2003, the football federation removed them from the leagues. This happened because of money problems. Suddenly, Cosenza did not have a professional football club.

In 2004, the club was allowed back into Serie D. This was a lower league. At the same time, a new club called A.S. Cosenza F.C. also started. This meant Cosenza had two different clubs in the same division for one year. But Cosenza Calcio 1914 eventually closed down for good.

After Cosenza Calcio 1914 faced problems, a club called Castrovillari moved to Cosenza in 2003. It changed its name to A.S. Cosenza Calcio. This club played in Serie D for four seasons.

Fortitudo Cosenza (2007–2011)

In 2007, A.S. Cosenza Calcio stopped playing in Serie D. However, all its players joined a new club called "Fortitudo Cosenza." This club had moved from a nearby town called Rende.

This new club then changed its name to "Cosenza Calcio 1914 S.r.l." It wanted to bring back the old club's history. But in 2011, this team was also removed from the professional championship. It did not appeal the decision. So, another new club, Nuova Cosenza Calcio, was started in Serie D.

Nuova Cosenza Calcio

In the summer of 2011, a brand new club was founded. It was named Nuova Cosenza Calcio. This club started playing in Serie D. It won its promotion playoffs, but it was not automatically promoted to a higher league.
