Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence was an important leader in Saint Kitts and Nevis. He served as the third Governor-General from 2013 to 2015. A Governor-General is like a representative of the King or Queen in a country. Sir Edmund was born on February 14, 1932. He officially started his role as Governor-General on January 1, 2013.

Early Life and Education
Sir Edmund Lawrence began his career as a teacher. He taught in elementary schools on Saint Kitts from 1951 to 1954. Later, he went to the University of London in England. In 1966, he earned a degree in Economics.
After finishing his studies, Sir Edmund taught again. He was a lecturer at Walbrook College in London. He taught there from 1967 to 1969.
Building a Banking Empire
Sir Edmund Lawrence returned to Saint Kitts in 1970. He started a very important bank called the St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank. This bank began with a small amount of money. Over time, it grew to be very large. It became the biggest local bank in the Eastern Caribbean region.
He also created other important companies. In 1972, he started the National Bank Trust Company (NBTC). The National Caribbean Insurance Company (NCIC) followed in 1973. In 2001, he established the St. Kitts and Nevis Mortgage and Investment Company (MICO). All these companies together formed the National Bank Group.
Sir Edmund was also a founding member of a group for bank leaders. This group is now called the Caribbean Association of Banks. He held many important positions in companies. These roles were in both private and public sectors. He worked in Saint Kitts and Nevis and across the Eastern Caribbean.
Awards and Recognition
Sir Edmund Lawrence received several special awards. These awards recognized his hard work and contributions.
Officer of the British Empire
In 1999, Sir Edmund was honored by the British Empire. He was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). This award is given for great achievements.
Companion of the Star of Merit
In 2009, he received a national honor. He was awarded the Companion of the Star of Merit (CSM). This is a special award from his home country.
Knight Commander and Grand Cross
In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II gave Sir Edmund a knighthood. He became a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG). This was for his excellent work in banking and finance. He received this honor at Buckingham Palace.
In 2013, Queen Elizabeth II gave him an even higher honor. He was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG). This is one of the highest honors given by the British Crown.
In November 2016, Prince Harry presented Sir Edmund with the insignia for this award.
Retirement and Family
Sir Edmund Lawrence retired from his role as Governor-General in May 2015. He is married to Lady Hulda Lawrence. They have six children together. Sir Edmund continues to be involved in non-profit groups. These include the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society and Rotary International.
