Early Life and Education
Timothy Harris grew up in a village called Tabernacle on the island of Saint Kitts. He went to high school at Cayon High School and Basseterre High School. After high school, he studied at six different universities. Two of these universities were in the Caribbean, and four were in Canada.
University Studies
In 1988, Harris earned his first degree from the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. He studied Accounting and graduated with top honors. He was the only student in his program to achieve this high distinction. He also won an award for being the best accounting student.
After finishing his first degree, he worked for two years at a company called S. L. Horsfords and Co Ltd. Then, from 1990 to 1992, he continued his studies. He earned a master's degree in accounting from the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago. He finished at the top of his class for this degree as well.
In 2001, Timothy Harris completed his highest degree, a Ph.D., from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. His Ph.D. was in administration, with a focus on accounting.
Political Career
Timothy Harris began his political journey in 1993. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Saint Kitts and Nevis Labour Party. He won elections in 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2010, serving his community in the Parliament.
Roles in Government
During his time as a Member of Parliament, Harris held many different jobs in the government. He served as a minister in charge of various areas, such as:
- Agriculture, Lands and Housing
- Education, Labour and Social Security
- Foreign Affairs and Education
- Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry and Commerce
He also wrote several articles and received awards for his work. These awards included the St. Kitts Youth Council Award for Excellence in Education. He also received awards for his contributions to the FESTAB community event and the Cayon High School.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 2013, Timothy Harris left the cabinet (the group of top government ministers). Later that year, he started his own political group called the People's Labour Party (PLP).
Before the 2015 general elections, the PLP joined forces with two other parties. They formed an alliance called Team Unity. This alliance won the elections. Even though his party, the PLP, won only one seat, Timothy Harris became the third Prime Minister of independent Saint Kitts and Nevis on 16 February 2015. He took over from Denzil Douglas, who had been Prime Minister for nearly 20 years.
