Early Life and Education
Timothy Harris was born and raised in the small village of Tabernacle on the island of Saint Kitts. After finishing high school, he went on to study at six different universities in the Caribbean and Canada. He was a very successful student.
In 1988, he earned a science degree in Accounting from the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. He graduated with First Class Honours, which is the highest grade possible. He was the only student in his program to achieve this that year.
He later earned a master's degree, also in accounting, from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2001, he completed a Ph.D. (a doctorate degree) from Concordia University in Canada, making him an expert in administration and accounting.
Political Career
Becoming a Politician
In 1993, Harris decided to enter politics. He joined the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1995. A Member of Parliament is someone elected by the people to represent them and make laws. He was re-elected four times.
Over the years, he was given many important roles in the government, called cabinet posts. He was in charge of different departments, including:
- Agriculture, Lands and Housing
- Education, Labour and Social Security
- Foreign Affairs and International Trade
Becoming Prime Minister
In 2013, Harris had a disagreement with the Prime Minister at the time, Denzil Douglas, and left the government. He then started his own political party called the People's Labour Party (PLP).
For the 2015 general election, Harris's party joined with two other parties, the People's Action Movement and the Concerned Citizens' Movement. Together, they formed a group called Team Unity.
Team Unity won the election. Even though Harris's party won only one seat, he was chosen to lead the new government. On February 16, 2015, Timothy Harris became the third Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis. He served in this role for over seven years, until August 2022.
