Edmund Shakespeare (born in 1580 in Stratford-upon-Avon – buried on December 31, 1607, in London) was an English actor who lived in the late 1500s and early 1600s. He was the younger brother of the famous playwright, William Shakespeare.
Who Was Edmund Shakespeare?
Edmund was the youngest child of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. He was one of William Shakespeare's younger brothers. Just like his older brother William, Edmund decided to become an actor. He moved to London to follow in William's footsteps and join the exciting world of theater.
Edmund's Short Life
Edmund Shakespeare had a son named Edward Shakespeare. Sadly, Edmund passed away in 1607 when he was only 27 years old. His death happened about four months after his son also passed away.
He was buried at a church called St Saviour's in Southwark, London. Today, this church is known as Southwark Cathedral. It is believed that his brother William might have paid for his burial. The records show that twenty shillings were paid for his funeral, which included a special bell ringing in the morning.
