Edna Lillian Doré (born Gorring; 31 May 1921 – 11 April 2014) was a British actress. She was well-known for her many small roles in TV comedies. She also played the character of Mo Butcher in the popular TV show EastEnders from 1988 to 1990.

Edna Doré's Acting Journey
Edna Doré started her acting career as a chorus girl. This meant she sang and danced in a group. She worked with a company called ENSA during wartime. Later, she spent 17 years performing in different plays at various theatres. She then joined the Royal National Theatre for 10 years. She was especially remembered for her roles in plays directed by Bill Bryden.
In 1960, Edna began acting on television. She appeared in many successful TV shows. These included Dixon of Dock Green, Doctor in the House, The Liver Birds, Terry and June, Tenko, Z-Cars, and Open All Hours.
Film and TV Highlights
In 1988, Edna starred in the film High Hopes, directed by Mike Leigh. For her role as Mrs. Bender, she won an award for Best Supporting Player in 1989. That same year, she joined the BBC soap opera EastEnders. She played Mo Butcher, who was the strong-willed mother of Frank Butcher.
While on EastEnders, Edna received praise for her acting. Her character, Mo, had a storyline about an elderly lady dealing with memory loss. This story showed how such a condition can affect a person and their family. Edna decided to leave the show in 1990. Her character was later written out of the show in 1992.
Edna also appeared in other films. These include Nil by Mouth (1997), Tube Tales (1999), and All or Nothing (2002).
In her later years, Edna continued to act in many TV shows. Some of these were Love Hurts (1992), Casualty (1993; 1997), Men Behaving Badly (1997), Holby City (2001), The Bill (2002; 2003 & 2006), and Eyes Down (2003–2004).
In 2006, she played Maeve in an episode of Doctor Who called "Fear Her". She also appeared in the comedy show That Mitchell and Webb Look in 2006. In 2008, she was in the Christmas special of Gavin & Stacey as Edna. In 2010, she played Nin Gallagher in Shameless. She also appeared in another Mike Leigh film, Another Year, in 2010. Her last TV appearance was in Midsomer Murders in 2011.
Radio Work
Edna Doré was also a talented radio actor. She performed in a play called Bringing Eddie Home. This play was based on a true story about a family's fight to bring their son's body home. In 1998, Edna was part of the BBC Radio 4 series Paradise Lost in Cyberspace. Her final radio role was as Alice in A Telegram from the Queen in 2011.
Edna Doré's Personal Life
Edna Doré lived in Barnes. She married actor, director, and writer Alexander Doré in 1946. They were together until his death in 2002. They had one son, Michael Doré. Edna studied acting with Anna Wing, who also played a well-known character, Lou Beale, in EastEnders. Edna Doré passed away on 11 April 2014, at the age of 92.
