Life and Career
Eduard Vilde grew up on a farm where his father worked. In 1883, he started his career as a journalist. He wrote for newspapers and shared his ideas.
Vilde loved to travel and lived in many different countries. For example, in the 1890s, he lived in Berlin, Germany. There, he learned about new ideas that influenced his writing. His stories often showed real life, just like the works of French writer Émile Zola.
Besides being a great writer, Vilde also spoke out against the old Russian rulers. He also criticized the German landowners in Estonia. When Estonia became an independent country in 1919, he became an ambassador. He worked in Berlin for several years, representing Estonia.
In his later years, Vilde spent time editing his many collected works. After he passed away in 1933, he was buried in Metsakalmistu cemetery in Tallinn. He was the first person to be buried there.
