About Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé
Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 1956. He is a lawyer and has a special degree in how public organizations are managed. He went to school at Colegio San Agustín. Later, he studied law at the Universidad Mayor de San Simón in Cochabamba. He also studied at Harvard University in the United States.
He served as Bolivia's ambassador to the Netherlands. An ambassador is like a country's representative in another country. In this role, he also worked with the International Court of Justice. This court helps countries solve disagreements peacefully. He left this job in November 2019.
His Time as President (2005–2006)
In 2005, Bolivia faced a lot of public protests. The president at the time, Carlos Mesa, decided to step down. Usually, the next person in line would be the head of the Senate or the Chamber of Deputies. However, they also decided not to take the job.
Because of this, Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé, who was the head of the country's court system, became president. He was not part of any political party. He took office on June 10, 2005. His main job was to arrange new elections within one year, as the country's rules required.
Evo Morales won the new elections in December 2005. Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé's time as president ended when Evo Morales officially became president.
After Being President (2006–present)
After his presidency, Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé faced some questions about decisions made during his time in office. There was a situation involving some old military equipment. Bolivia had bought about 30 missiles from China many years before. By 2005, these missiles were no longer useful.
Rodríguez Veltzé made the decision to have them taken apart and destroyed. He later said he did not know that the United States would be involved in helping to destroy them. Some people, including the new president Evo Morales, thought this transfer was not right.
He was accused of a serious offense in 2006. However, after a review, he was later cleared of all these accusations. This means he was found not guilty.
