Eduardo Matarazzo Suplicy (born 21 June 1941) is a Brazilian politician, economist, and professor. He is a key figure and one of the founders of the Workers' Party of Brazil (PT). In 2016, he became the most voted city councilor in the history of Brazil.
Suplicy is well-known for supporting the idea of universal basic income. This is a system where everyone gets a regular payment from the government, no matter their income. He ran for President of Brazil in 2002 but did not get his party's nomination. Suplicy was previously married to Marta Suplicy, who was once the Mayor of São Paulo.

About Eduardo Suplicy
Early Life and Family
Eduardo Suplicy was born into a well-known family in Brazil. His father, Paulo Cochrane Suplicy, was a coffee grower. His mother, Filomena Matarazzo, came from the famous Italian Brazilian Matarazzo family. Her grandfather, Francesco Matarazzo, built a very large industrial business in Latin America in the early 1900s.
Education and Career
Suplicy studied business management at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo. He also earned a degree in economics from Michigan State University. He later became a professor at the School of Business Administration at Fundação Getúlio Vargas, where he still teaches today.
In 1968, he earned his master's degree. In 1973, he completed his PhD at Michigan State University. His PhD paper was about how small changes in currency value affect Brazil's economy. He also did more advanced studies at Stanford University.
Suplicy has written several books about economics and politics. He also received an honorary degree (a special award) from the University of Louvain in 2016.
Family Life
In 1964, Eduardo Suplicy married Marta Teresa Smith de Vasconcelos, known as Marta Suplicy. They had three sons: João, André, and Eduardo. They were a very famous couple in Brazilian politics until they divorced in 2001. Eduardo Suplicy now has a partner named Monica Dallari, who is a journalist.
Political Journey
Becoming a Senator
Eduardo Suplicy was the first person from the Workers' Party (PT) to be elected as a Senator. He started his political career as a State Deputy in 1979. He is one of the founders of the Workers' Party and an important member of its leadership.
He was first elected Senator for the state of São Paulo in 1991. He served as the leader of the PT in the Federal Senate three times. In the 1998 elections, he received the most votes for a Senator in Brazil. He also got the second-highest number of votes ever for a Senator in São Paulo's history. He served as a Senator until 2015.
Recent Political Roles
After his time as a Senator, Suplicy continued his public service. He was elected as a City Councilor for São Paulo in 2016. He received a record number of votes for this position. In 2023, he became a State Deputy for São Paulo.
Public Actions
On July 25, 2016, Suplicy was briefly held by the police during a protest. He was demonstrating against people being removed from their homes in São Paulo. He was released after a few hours.
Key Ideas and Proposals
One of Eduardo Suplicy's most important ideas is the Basic Income program for Brazil. This program would give a regular income to all citizens. He first proposed this law in the Senate in 1991. It took many years, but the law was finally approved in 2004.
He has also proposed other laws. These include laws to make public the names of major debtors to the government. He also worked on laws to create a national system for cooperative societies. Suplicy has always focused on making sure everyone has basic rights and a fair share of wealth.
