Eduardo Matarazzo Suplicy, born on June 21, 1941, is a well-known Brazilian politician, economist, and professor. He is one of the people who helped start the Workers' Party of Brazil (PT). In 2016, he became the most voted city councilor in the history of Brazil during the São Paulo elections.

Suplicy is famous for supporting the idea of a universal basic income. This is a system where everyone gets a regular payment from the government. He ran for President of Brazil in 2002 but did not get the nomination from his party. Suplicy was previously married to Marta Suplicy, who used to be the Mayor of São Paulo.

His Family and Background

Eduardo Suplicy was born to Paulo Cochrane Suplicy, a coffee grower, and Filomena Matarazzo. His family owns the well-known Suplicy Cafés coffee company. He is also part of the traditional Italian Brazilian Matarazzo family. His mother's grandfather, Francesco Matarazzo, built the largest industrial complex in Latin America in the early 1900s.

Education and Career

Suplicy studied business management at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas' School of Business Administration. He is now a professor there. He also studied economics at Michigan State University.

In 1964, Suplicy married Marta Teresa Smith de Vasconcelos, known as Marta Suplicy. They had three sons: João, André, and Eduardo. They were a famous couple in Brazilian politics until they divorced in 2001. Eduardo now has a new partner, Monica Dallari, who is a journalist.

In 1966, he became a professor in the Economics Department at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas. He still works there today. He earned his master's degree in 1968 and his PhD in 1973 from Michigan State University. His PhD thesis was about how small changes in currency value affect the Brazilian economy. He also did more advanced studies at Stanford University.

Eduardo Suplicy has written several books. These books cover topics like economic policies and the idea of a guaranteed minimum income. In 2016, he received an honorary degree from the University of Louvain (UCLouvain).

His Political Journey

Suplicy was the first person from the Brazilian Labour Party (PT) to be elected as a senator. His political career began almost 20 years before that. He was first elected as a State Deputy in 1979. He is one of the people who founded the Workers' Party of Brazil (PT). He is also a member of the party's main leadership groups.

He was elected Senator for the state of São Paulo in 1991. He served as the leader of the PT in the Federal Senate three times. He was a Senator for São Paulo from 1991 to 2015. In 1998, he received the most votes for a senator in Brazil and the second-highest number of votes ever in São Paulo.

In July 2016, Suplicy was briefly held by the São Paulo Military Police. This happened during a protest where he was showing support for people against a property repossession. He was released after three hours.

What He Fights For

One of the most important laws Suplicy proposed was to create a Basic Income program in Brazil. This law was approved by the Senate in 1991. It aims to give everyone a basic income to help them live.

Suplicy has also proposed other laws. These include laws to make public the names of major debtors to the government. He also worked on laws to help labor union representatives and to create a Brazilian Citizenship Fund. He even tried to propose a law to shorten the term for senators to four years.

Eduardo Suplicy has been elected to many different political roles. He has served as a State Deputy, Federal Deputy, City Councilor, and Senator. He is known for getting a lot of votes in elections.
