Serving on the Frontier
Before 1895, Anderson worked on the American frontier. This meant he helped keep peace and order in the less settled parts of the country. He was involved in the Ghost Dance War in 1890. This was a conflict between the U.S. Army and some Native American groups.
Wars and Commendations
Anderson also served in the Spanish–American War. In 1891, he fought in the Santiago campaign in Cuba. For his brave actions there, he received three special mentions called Silver Star commendations. Later, in 1898, he also took part in the Puerto Rican campaign.
In 1914, he furthered his military education by graduating from the Army War College. This college helps train senior military leaders.
World War I and Leadership
During World War I, from 1917 to 1920, Edward Anderson was in charge of several military camps and units across the United States. On October 1, 1918, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. This was a special rank given during wartime.
After the war, he continued to lead important groups. From 1919 to 1921, he commanded the 13th Cavalry and the military base at Fort Clark, Texas. Later, from 1921 to 1922, he led the Ninth Cavalry in the Philippines. He then helped create and command the 26th Cavalry of Philippine Scouts until early 1923.
Retirement and Recognition
After serving for 38 years, Edward Anderson retired from the army as a colonel on April 28, 1923. However, his high rank was later officially recognized again. On June 21, 1930, the U.S. Congress passed a law that restored his brigadier general's star.
